We're excited to launch a new ILGISA Board Spotlight series, designed to introduce you to the dedicated members of our Board of Directors. Each installment will highlight a different board member, offering a glimpse into their professional background, current role, and passion for GIS. Through this series, we hope to foster stronger connections within our community and celebrate the individuals guiding our organization.
Burt McAlpine, GISP

Can you tell us a little about your background and how you got started in GIS?
I began my GIS career at Fort Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas, while pursuing my three Bachelor of Science degrees in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology, Environmental Biology, and Environmental Chemistry. My work focused on Land Condition Trend Analysis (LCTA) and LCTA II projects, where we used Trimble backpack GPS units to navigate to and collect data from designated sample plots. All field observations were recorded on "Rite in the Rain" paper, and the data was processed using ArcInfo 7—entirely command-line driven with AML scripting—alongside ArcView 3.x with custom Avenue extensions.
After graduating, I began working for a large environmental consulting firm in New Mexico, where my GIS learning truly accelerated. At the time, most colleges did not offer formal GIS programs or even access to GIS software, so much of my early development was hands-on and self-taught, working directly on real-world projects that demanded precision, adaptability, and continuous learning.
What is your current role, and how does GIS play a part in your work?
In my current role as Senior GIS Developer & Software Application Integration Engineer at JULIE, Inc., I manage all aspects of the organization's GIS operations, including member notifications and base map updates. I’ve developed numerous Python and Node.js applications to support reporting, statistical analysis, and financial processes. I collaborate with every department at JULIE in some capacity, ensuring cohesive integration across systems. Additionally, I serve as the primary point of contact for our vendor, leading current system changes and representing JULIE in ongoing discussions regarding the development of the next-generation platform.
How long have you been involved with ILGISA?
I joined ILGISA shortly after starting at JULIE in February 2007. Membership has been immensely valuable—both to me professionally and to JULIE—by fostering connections and collaboration with GIS professionals across the state.
What motivated you to join the ILGISA board?
I was motivated to join the ILGISA board because I’ve seen firsthand the impact this organization has on the GIS community in Illinois. Over the years, ILGISA has supported my own professional growth and provided opportunities to connect, learn, and collaborate with others across the state. I wanted to give back by helping shape the future of the organization, support emerging professionals, and ensure that the GIS community continues to grow, innovate, and stay connected.
What are some key initiatives or projects you've been involved in as a board member?
As a member of the Professional Development Committee, I’m committed to giving back to the GIS community by collaborating with fellow members to create opportunities for learning, growth, and mentorship.
What challenges do GIS professionals face today, and how can organizations like ours help?
GIS professionals today face a range of challenges, from keeping pace with rapidly evolving technology to demonstrating the value of geospatial data in decision-making. Many also work in small teams—or even alone—where resources, support, and collaboration opportunities may be limited.
Organizations like ILGISA play a crucial role by offering professional development, fostering a strong statewide network, and creating platforms for sharing ideas, tools, and solutions. By continuing to promote education, mentorship, and community engagement, ILGISA can help GIS professionals stay connected, empowered, and equipped to meet the demands of a constantly changing field.
What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the GIS field?
My biggest piece of advice for someone entering the GIS field is: don’t be afraid to ask questions or reach out for help. No one knows everything—GIS is a broad and ever-evolving discipline, and even the most experienced professionals are constantly learning.
Stay curious, get hands-on with tools and data, and take advantage of communities like ILGISA where you can connect with others, share ideas, and learn from real-world experience. Building relationships, staying engaged, and being open to continuous learning will take you far in this field.
What’s your favorite GIS-related project you’ve worked on?
One of my favorite GIS-related projects was a military mobility modeling effort. While I can’t go into too much detail, the project involved analyzing variables like tree basal area, soil types, and moisture conditions to assess terrain suitability. The data was categorized based on vehicle types—ranging from heavy tracked to light wheeled—each with unique movement constraints.
Let’s just say, in Arkansas terrain, not much can stop an M1 Abrams tank… aside from deep water or a cliff. It was a fascinating blend of environmental science, engineering, and geospatial analysis, and a great example of how GIS can support complex, real-world decision-making.
Outside of work, do you have any hobbies or interests you would like to share?
Outside of work, I enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and exploring. I find that these hobbies help me recharge and stay connected to nature, offering a perfect balance to my professional life. It’s also a great way to unwind and appreciate the world from a different perspective.
What’s one fun fact about you that people might not know?
I grew up on a Christmas Tree Farm in Bismarck, AR.
What goals do you have for the organization moving forward?
Moving forward, my goal for the organization is to continue fostering a strong, collaborative GIS community that supports both professional growth and the advancement of our field. I’d like to focus on enhancing opportunities for mentorship and networking, ensuring that both new and seasoned professionals have the resources they need to succeed. Additionally, I aim to help ILGISA stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and trends, so we can continue to provide value to our members and help shape the future of GIS in Illinois.
How can members of the GIS community get more involved in ILGISA?
Members of the GIS community can get more involved in ILGISA by joining one of our various committees, where you can contribute your expertise and help shape the direction of the organization. We’re also always looking for individuals to share their GIS work, whether through monthly webinars, regional meetings, or our Annual Conference. These platforms provide great opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing, and professional growth. Additionally, I encourage everyone to spread the word and encourage others to become ILGISA members—more members mean more opportunities for collaboration and innovation in the GIS community.
